When Maya Lin's design was originally proposed and built it was poorly received. It wasn't a monument like any other and many felt it was a slap in the face of the veterans. But opinions soon changed when people began visiting the memorial. The polished surface of the stone gives the visitor a clear reflection of them self, superimposed on the 58,260 names of those who never came home. People remember, people cry, and people love the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
