Many Americans were not happy with Maya Lin's Wall designed memorial. As a compromise, congress approved Hart's Three Servicemen Statue as an addition to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The lead statue was modeled after a 21-year-old Marine, the left soldier a Cuban-American, and the right soldier was complied from several African-American models. The soldiers are bronze and stand approximately 8 feet tall. They gaze off at the Wall as if in tribute to their fallen comrades. The statue was planned in an effort to prevent further controversy and help heal the nation.
