The Elk (Cervus elaphus)

The elk is the second largest of the deer family just behind the Moose. They were extremely plentiful in the early 1800's but their range is now extremely limited due to over hunting and invasion of their habitat. They are herbivores but can be dangerous if approached.  Native Americans called them "wapiti" meaning white rump due to the lighter hair on their rump.
