The Battle of Iwo Jima World War II

The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle in World War II in which the US Armed Forces fought for and captured the island against the Japanese forces. The goal was to capture the entire island including the three airbases there for use to stage forces for the invasion of the Japanese islands. It was found to be not as useful as had been imagined. This was probably the hardest fought battle in the islands and the photo of the raising of the US flag is iconic yet today of the battle and the entire war.
